RTE have launched the new DTT (digital terrestrial television) service called 'Saorview', this is to comply with the analogue switch off (ASO) in Europe that will take place
24th Oct 2012,
if you receive the Irish channels via an aerial & an analogue TV you will lose the Irish stations on 24th Oct 2012,

TV's connected to'PIPE', 'UPC', 'SKYTV' etc will not be affected. if you have an existing UHF aerial it may be adequate to receive 'Saorview', then all you will need is an approved 'Saorview' TV or set top box

Please note TV's or equipment branded 'Freeview' from the UK will not work with Irish DTT,
however 'Freeview HD'  TV's or equipment will.
if you are considering purchasing a new TV ensure it is Irish DTT compatible.
a properly installed aerial & a DTT set top box (STB) if you have an older analogue TV without a MPEG4 digital tuner,
or,
a properly installed aerial & a newer TV with with an integrated MPEG4 digital tuner (IDTV).

Also available are STB's (combo boxes) with both DTT & Satellite tuners built in, these STB's have the benefit of all the free to air satellite channels & Irish DTT in one unit, making all the channels accessible via on remote control, but they are not 'approved' STB's & future features such as digital teletext may not work, also they do not have a full TV guide on the satellite side only showing whats on 'now & next',
